Large Lathes for Energy Industry

2020-08-22 00:41:01

“Hyundai WIA is Korea’s leading machine tool company and a subsidiary of the Hyundai Motor Group. At the beginning of the foundation of the company, the lineup was mainly composed of machines tools for automotive parts processing,” said a company spokesperson. “However, the lineup of machine tools has been expanded since the early 2000s and the company has increased its reputation as a comprehensive machine tool maker. Hyundai WIA has opened the R&D center in Germany to focus on the development of machines for the energy industry, which is the next-generation market, and we are currently launching various large lathes for oil pipe processing.”

The premier representative model is the KL8000LY, a Y-axis lathe with a large 32” chuck and 12.6” (320 mm) spindle bore.

“Other machine tool builder’s lathes use inclined/angled beds,” said the spokesperson. “The disadvantage of the inclined bed is that the height of the machine increases when the Y-axis is attached to the bed. For this reason, the structure of the machine becomes unstable and has poor rigidity. However, KL8000LY incorporates a flatbed design to eliminate this disadvantage. As a result, the stiffness and rigidity of the bed is improved by 25% and a generous max. Ø920 turning diameter can be achieved.”

To further improve rigidity, the KL8000LY utilizes a wedge type system to drive the Y-axis. “The wedge type Yaxis driving method is superior in rigidity, so stable processing is possible without being strained even during heavy cutting when compared to our competitors,” said the spokesperson. “In addition, the 220 mm Y-axis travel, which is best in class, provides more travel, especially when eccentric machining is necessary.”

According to the company, the KL8000LY displays excellent performance during heavy cutting using a 2-step gear box with 7,045 Nm high torque at 700 RPM.

The headstock casting of the KL8000LY is designed to easily dissipate heat generated during machining by incorporating heat dissipating ribs.

The KL8000LY can machine components up to 3,250 mm and a hydraulic rear chuck can be installed when machining long pipes.

Hyundai WIA has a wide line-up of lathes ranging from smaller bar and chuck lathes to large lathes to high performance 5-axis machining centers for the multiple industries such as medical and energy.
