SW SOUTHWEST SE SOUTHEAST NE NORTHEAST MW MIDWEST W WEST Management Lessons We Can Learn from U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Steve Stricker You do not have to be a golfer to benefit from the management lessons Steve Stricker displayed at this year’s Ryder Cup competition. Stricker may become regarded as the greatest Ryder Cup Captain ever and here is why. Preparation: Stricker not only knew the importance of preparation but also how to prepare the team. He brought the whole team together for practice rounds two weeks prior to the competition “and all showed up,” Stricker said. Team building was evi-dent from the beginning and the mu-tual care and respect shown by all to all was on full display. Player Assessment: Evaluating and recognizing player ability and talent is essential in a leader and Stricker has it in spades. Consider Captain’s choice Scottie Scheffler who beat in the singles match the world No. 1 golfer Jon Rahm. Stricker did not burden the players John Gross, Publisher with long lectures. He kept his com-ments brief and stayed out of the way of his players. He commented, “They know what they need to do and do not need me to tell them.” They knew because of the preparation Stricker provided. Credit Goes to Others: When praise came after the United States beat Europe with the largest margin of victory since 1979 (19-9), Stricker di-rected the credit to others. In fact, he credited a person he consulted who was not even able to be there (Tiger). What humility. He credited his vice-captains. He credited his players. He credited all except himself. A true leader indeed is Steve Stricker. We can learn a lot from sports and how the game of life needs to be played. John Gross, Publisher P.S. Golfers only: Tip.
