OSG has developed the EXOPROWHO- Ni 3D and 5D carbide drills for machining nickel-based heat-resistant alloys. “Nickel-based heat-resistant alloys are materials with extremely poor machinabi lity,” said a company spokesperson. “They are approximately 10 times more difficult to machine than stainless steels. Due to their high heat resistance, toughness and ductile characteristics, they are commonly used in turbine blades of jet engines and other aircraft related components where a high level of heat resistance is required. Automotive components and household comb u s - tion equipment have also begun to incorporate these durable materials.” The EXO - PRO-WHO-Ni 3D and 5D carbide drills are engineered with sharper cutting edges for machining of agingtreated nickel-based alloys. The sharp cutting edges are designed to suppress the generation of heat during machining and promote the stable creation of cutting chips. With respect to the twist angle of the flutes, a weak twist shape has been used to attain higher tool rigidity for machining of higher precision holes. The WHO-Ni 3D and 5D carbide drills are able to produce small cutting chips to help provide trouble-free chip evacuation and stable machining. The addition of OSG’s WXS coating is intended to enable high-speed machining with internally fed watersoluble coolant, which further prolongs tool life.
