Chevalier ’s new line of vertical turning centers are designed to combine hard turning, milling, drilling, tapping and grinding in a single setup. The machines have programmable ±100 mm Y-axis that enable them to perform multi-tasking, reducing cycle times and accuracy discrepancies involved when a part has to go through different machines. The machine is designed for large monolithic part processing in aerospace, wind turbine, oilfield, mining, locomotive and heavy construction industries. The spindle features a clutch type tool clamping system plus eight hydraulic locking pins which keep the tool in place during heavy stock removal. When in use, the turning tool holder holds a 0.5 mm space between spindle taper and tool taper, eliminating load stress on ramspindle bearings and substantially prolonging spindle life. The driven gear of the spindle is made of SCM435 steel, which has been pre-tensioned and pre-hardened to HRC58. The grinding accuracy of the gears are JIS top-rated. High rigidity NN bearings, 20HP high torque spindle motor and 2,500 RPM spindle speed combine to deliver heavy duty performance for multiple applications, the company said. The cross rail elevation system with 31.5 inch travel is bui l t wi th dual , large diameter ballscrews and is designed to lock securely at any position. This design allows the ram to be placed closer to the workpiece, very helpful whenmachining thin workpieces, said the company. “The 240mm square ram is made of SCM435 forged steel and securely supported on all four slides. This keeps the cutting capability and accuracy at optimum levels, specially useful when the cutting tool is very close to the rotary table surface,” said a company spokesperson. The rotary table is driven by 37/45kWspindlemotorwith optional ZF gearbox for low speedmachining with high torque or high speed machining for fine finishing. The Caxis runs with an independent servo motor control with hydraulic braking system and can turn at 3.33 RPM while providing minimum 0.001-degree Caxis indexing at 0-1,200 degree feedrate. Added to the regular spindle, the CF axis can perform multiple tasks such as milling, tapping, drilling and profilemachining. Threemodels are offered, based on the diameter of the rotary table: 1,200/1,600/2,000 mm; maximum swing/cutting diameter is 1,600/2,000/2,500 mm while maximum turning height is 1,200/1,350/ 1,600 mm. Maximum table load capacity for the biggest model is 26,455 lbs. The wide open work zone facilitates easy loading and unloading of workpieces. With 60HP/80HP/100HP high torque spindle motors directly driven by a ZF gearbox, the guaranteed maximum torque output is 11,461/13,917/ 35,994 Nm in the three models. The rotary table runs with heavy duty NNCross roller cylindrical bearings, assuring stable and powerful cutting even when machining heavy and large diameter workpieces. “Despite its size, the machine is compact enough for stand-alone applications or integration into existing production lines,” said the spokesperson. “The heavy duty box type, Meehanite cast iron construction gives the machine increased rigidity and vibration dampening characteristics, enabling it to make deeper cuts, achieve higher metal removal rates and reduce tool wear. The extra wide, fully supported square ways on the Y-axis features hand-scraped sliding way surfaces for even load distribution. The tapered gib sliding surfaces are coated with anti-friction material for consistent accuracy and smooth movement. The two lubr i cant tanks hold 1.58 gallons each while the coolant tank capacity is 39.62 gallons. “Heavy ribbing in the base and column areas reinforce the entire frame. Regular models use 16-tool carousel typeATC that accepts tools up to 11.8 i n c heslong and weighing up to 110 lbs for turning tools and 19. 8 lbs for rotary tools while models with C- & Y-axis have 20-tool ATC. Chip disposal is done efficiently through the machine’s slant bed design and an automatic rear chip flushing system which pushes the chip down to the dual screw type chip conveyor and chip cart. For unattended machining capabilities, Chevalier also offers 20/32/48/60 tool ATCs. A FANUC OiT/18i control with manual guide Oi offers an operator-friendly, conversational programming environment. Options include automatic grinder function, grinding tools, ZF gear box for milling spindle, XZ axis linear scales, 20/50/70 bar coolant-thruspindle with cartridge, paper type and centrifuge type filter system andTurning tool/rotary tool holders.
