COE Press Equipment has recently installed a new “Clam Shell” CPPS- 406-42 Power Straightener and a CPRPO- 15042 Coil Reel atWellman Friction Products in Akron, OH, replacing the company’s current equipment. The new straightener can process material up to 42” wide and up to .250” thick, depending upon coil width. It is provided with 30 HP AC variable speed drive capable of running up to 60 FPM linespeeds. Wellman is using the straightener in a line that feeds an existing 600-ton press producing large clutch plates for use in earth-moving and farming equipment. “COE’s new “Clam Shell” straightener features an easy head lift function that allows for maintenance and cleaning. It will reduce downtime for Wellman as compared to the older unit, which required disassembly of the straightener head to clean the rolls,” said a COE spokesperson. With the “Clam Shell” straightener, the top rollers separate from the bottom rollers to provide easy access to the straightening rolls for inspection and cleaning. Pushbutton controls are used to activate hydraulic cylinders that raise the head containing the top rolls. The CPPS-406model features 4.0” diameter straightening rolls and 6.3” diameter pinch rolls. The “Clam Shell” concept is applicable to any size COE straightener. Other features provided as standard with this COE straightener include a Nine-Roll Straightener head for effective straightening of high yield strength material, COE’s “Alligator” Peeler for effective dekinking and threading operations and independently adjusted Powered Coil Guides for effective coil loading and guiding. Other options provided for the Wellman application include COE’s “Loop- Master” laser loop control, a nonmarking chrome roll package, single row straightener backup rollers, selfcentering hand crank entrance edge guides and a Trabon Automatic Lubrication system.
