J&M Machine has begun production of its patent-pending High Torque Retention Knobs for toolholders. The company had earlier developed its patent-pending Taper Shank Test Fixture in an effort to resolve the wear or spalling marks on CNC mill toolholders. Using this fixture, J&Mtested popular brand toolholders with a variety of standard retention knobs available in the market, including its own. “Earlier investigations revealed that the wear marks on the toolholders were directly linked to the distortion caused by the installation of a standard retention knob into the holder,” said John Stoneback, President of J&M Machine Inc. “This distortion causes amiss-fit of the toolholder in the spindle, resulting in wearmarks, tool chatter, poor finishes, decreased tool life and machine noise. J&M’s new design eliminates or decreases the distortion by two-to-ten times the distortion caused by standard retention knobs. I’m confident that a manufacturing facility is going to see an immediate 10-30 percent reduction of milling costs by switching over to these new High Torque Retention Knobs.” The company has an inventory of 45,000 pieces of the high torque versions in 72 of the most common or popular retention knobs in the CAT 30, CAT 40 and CAT 50 sizes. J&M plans on stocking CAT 60 size knobs in the future, along with knobs manufactured under the BT, DIN and ISO Standards. J&Malso produces special knobs upon request.
