Father & Sons Machine Precision in Santa Fe Springs, CA, manufactures tiremolds for one of its customers. The customer was expanding its tire sizes and required a largermold than Father & Sons could machine. Joel Martinez, President, and his sons working for the company, decided to increase theirmachine turning capabilities. The largest lathe Father & Sons Machine Precision had was a 33- inch diameter by 120-inch between centers. To create future growth opportunities the decision was made to go beyond the requirements for this new tire mold and expand their machine turning capabilities. “A heavy duty lathe that had at least a 40” diameter capability was required for the large tire mold, but we decided to purchase a larger Ganesh big bore 44” by 160” between centers, heavy-duty manual lathe to increase our capabilities for other components we could manufacture,” said Eddie Martinez. The Martinez family considered a 48” diameter by 60” between centers lathe, but they thought it would limit their capabilities. The Ganesh GT-44160 heavy-duty big bore lathe was a better choice in order to expand andmachine longer components. Father & Sons Machine has been manufacturing rubber and steel rollers as well as long shafts for over ten years. The Ganesh GT-44160 manual lathe the company chose features a 20 HP spindle motor and a 6” spindle. It has two chuck sizes with the largest one being a 40”, 4-jaw chuck. “The manual readout has proven to be very accurate,” said EddieMartinez.Ataper attachment assistswith tapering a long part up to 80”. Two steady rests hold the part securely, a 13-inch and a 22- inch. The machine bed is ofMeehanite casting. The hardened and precision ground ways with Turcite-B coating are designed for stability. The tire manufacturer’smachining requirements have been fulfilled with the new Ganesh lathe. “The tolerances and the finish on the mold meet the customer’s requests fully,” said Eddie Martinez. “And we now have capabilities to turn larger and longer components.” Father & SonsMachine Precision is a precision machine shop with a broad range of capabilities. Founded by Joel R. Martinez in 1999 with the help of four sons, the company has expanded and moved into a larger shop. The diversity of manufacturing processes at Father & SonsMachine includes turning, milling, precision welding, grinding, heat treating and sand blasting. After machining and other processes are performed the company also checks components for quality assurance before they are shipped to customers. Materials used to manufacture a wide range of components and products include cold rolled steel, hot rolled steel, stainless steel, tool steel, bronze, titanium, copper, Phenolic, nylon, rubber, polyurethane and other materials. Machining can be done up to .0005” tolerances depending on the client’s specifications. Father & Sons has performed repairs on all types of parts and machinery. The parts are cleaned and prepared forwork and inspected for damage. Repairs are made and the item reassembled. Then the repair is inspected for quality. Rubber and steel roller repair is also a specialty at the shop. The process for each job starts by determining with the customer what the project is going to be andwhat steps need to be taken to fulfill the customer’s requirements. Often a sample part is manufactured or machined to make sure that the design of the project is exactly what the customer wants. Only after this consultation and approval process does Father & Sons proceed to finish the project. “We have not been limited on any project our customers have brought to us,” said Eddie. “We have had some unique projects.” The company has helped design and manufacture custom shopping mall stands. Another project was custom generators that were placed in the desert for testing purposes. “Now we can machine long large parts if our customers request them,” said Mr. Martinez.
